About Project Barley

Picture of Lowell & Brent

The seed of Project Barley was planted back in 2008 when Rives Borland and Brent Reger first met, surrounded by music and mutual friends.

Both being avid homebrewers, many discussions throughout the years revolved around starting a brewery in the South Bay.

The idea laid dormant until 2018 when, in a casual lunch meeting with Lowell Bakke, owner of The Standing Room restaurants where Reger‘s band Barley plays regularly, the discussion turned to opening a brewery.

With a restauranteur, an engineer, and a marketer on board…..and a mutual love for beer...the plan was hatched.  In a world where starting a brewery has turned into who can scale the fastest and sell to a major player, Rives, Brent, and Lowell's plan revolved around live music, hand-making small batch beer, and focusing on keeping it local and in the tap room.

EXECUTIVE STAFF

BRENT REGER

Chief Executive Officer
Brent grew up in a military family, living all over the country, and taking in all of the experiences associated with the lifestyle. While attending Colorado State University, craft beer was a way of life with several small breweries in close proximity. An entrepreneur at heart, Brent set out to combine his love of craft beer and passion for music. As a side project for Rives and Lowell, Reger decided to be the “frontman” for the brewery and Project Barley was born. You can find Brent at the brewery a lot, building things, booking bands, brewing beer, etc….but on his time off you can find him at the beach playing volleyball, coaching at Pacific Soul Volleyball Club, playing gigs with Barley, and hanging with his wife Tori and their 2 kids Hudson and Parker.

RIVES BORLAND

Chief Brewing Officer
With more than 10 years as a homebrewer, Rives joined Project Barley as the Chief Brewing Officer, overseeing all aspects of the brewing operations. As a highly active member of the brewing community, Rives has served as a National BJCP judge in nearly a hundred brewing competitions, been a longtime member of both Strand Homebrewers and Pacific Gravity homebrew clubs, been featured in issues of Zymurgy Magazine, and has won numerous awards for his beers at local and regional competitions, including a medal in the final round of the National Homebrew Competition. Believe it or not, Rives also works full-time as a Payload Systems Engineer for The Boeing Satellite Development Center in El Segundo. He holds Masters of Engineering and Bachelor of Science degrees in Electrical and Computer Engineering from Cornell University.

LOWELL BAKKE

Chief Operating Officer
Originating from the beautiful island of Oahu, Bakke got his start in the service industry working at one of the best restaurants on the Island. Seeking more in the culinary world, Bakke decided to open a small takeout restaurant of his own in Redondo Beach called The Standing Room. Capitalizing on great food and reasonable prices, Bakke turned that little restaurant in the back of a liquor store into multiple locations and a recognizable brand. His Hermosa location has become one of the best local music spots in the South Bay and hosts many great musicians and bands on a weekly basis. Lowell’s ability to efficiently operate a fast paced restaurant made him a perfect member on the Project Barley team. Lowell's experience and talents make the operations of the taproom smooth and easy, and he gets to share his love of great beer with the community and help grow the Project Barley brand in Lomita.
